Strengthening Global Connections, PHG and Sunway Group Explore Collaboration in Education

Building education that remains relevant for the future requires connections with diverse perspectives, experiences, and communities, both within and beyond institutional and national boundaries. This spirit underpins the relationship between Pelita Harapan Group (PHG) and Sunway Group as they create opportunities for exchanging ideas and exploring potential collaboration in education.
The visit of the Sunway Group delegation to Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Lippo Village Main Campus in Tangerang marked an opportunity to strengthen the longstanding relationship between Sunway Group and Lippo Group, while also exploring various opportunities for collaboration in education. The meeting brought together representatives from Sunway Group, Sunway Education Group, Sunway University, and Sunway Healthcare Group with leaders from across the PHG education ecosystem.
The Sunway Group delegation was welcomed by Dr. Stephanie Riady, B.A., M.Ed., President of Pelita Harapan Group (PHG), together with leaders from UPH and Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH). Also in attendance were Christine Wijaya, B.A., Director of Global Partnerships & International Office at UPH; Dr. Velliana Tanaya, S.H., M.H., Executive Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at UPH and Dean of the Faculty of Law at UPH; and Selwyn Khoo, Group Director of Marketing and Operations at SPH.
The Sunway Group delegation was led by Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group, Founder and Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, and Council Member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN), together with senior leaders from Sunway Group and institutions within its ecosystem.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the role of education in preparing young people to navigate an increasingly connected and dynamic world. For PHG, global partnerships are part of its efforts to expand learning opportunities, enrich academic experiences, and build networks that can create broader impact for communities.
President of Pelita Harapan Group, Dr. Stephanie Riady, expressed her appreciation for Sunway Group’s visit while emphasizing the importance of shared vision and values as a foundation for building sustainable collaboration.

We greatly appreciate the various initiatives undertaken by Sunway University to create impact through education. We see a shared vision and values between our two institutions in our commitment to continuously advance the quality of education. This shared foundation provides a strong basis for us to develop collaboration, learn from one another, and expand our collective contribution together”
During the meeting, PHG also introduced its education ecosystem and various initiatives developed to address the needs of education today and in the future. One of the areas highlighted was the development of a STEM ecosystem through teacher capacity building, the development of practical and experiential learning, and cross-sector collaboration.
This approach forms part of PHG’s efforts to provide education that remains relevant to developments in science and technology while continuing to focus on the needs and holistic development of students.
Beyond the exchange of ideas, the discussion also explored several potential areas of collaboration between UPH and Sunway University. These included academic and cultural exchange, student and faculty mobility, the exchange of information and scholarly materials, collaborative research and community engagement, as well as the potential development of academic programs and international activities.
The exploration of these opportunities is expected to develop into concrete initiatives that enrich academic experiences and expand opportunities for students, faculty members, and the wider education community. For PHG, this step forms part of its efforts to build strategic partnerships that enable education to extend beyond the classroom and contribute more broadly to society.
