Transforming Education: SPH Kemang Village's Innovative Middle School Program
10-October-2023
Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH) Kemang Village has taken a significant step in its commitment to education by officially launching its Middle School Program, accompanied by a celebration of learning at the Middle School Academic Fair on October 5-6, 2023. The event was attended by parents, education authorities and various mass media.
The journey through middle school can be a challenging transition, both for students and parents. As children face the shift to a larger school environment, a heavier academic workload, and diverse teaching styles, it's essential to provide them with the right support. Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH) Kemang Village recognizes the unique challenges middle school students (ages 11-14) encounter in today's educational landscape and aims to address these issues.
The SPH Kemang Village Middle School Program places a primary focus on fostering holistic development. They are committed to nurturing not only the academic growth of their students but also their personal and social well-being. Through a dynamic culture, strong community bonds, dedicated teaching teams, and interactive learning environments, the school provides an all-encompassing educational experience that equips students with essential life skills and the confidence to excel academically and thrive personally.
The Middle School Program stands on four pillars: Culture, Community, Teaching Team, and Learning Environments.
Culture, where curiosity is cultivated through tackling academic challenges.
Community, through thoughtfully planned schedules and classrooms, and deep subject engagement.
Teaching Team, which offers personalized support with a focus on holistic development and collaboration.
Learning Environments, where hands-on learning thrives in student-centered classrooms.
Grade 7 student, Aurelia, expressed her deep passion for mathematics. Her math journey at the school is characterized by a perfect balance of challenge and engagement, thanks to her teacher, Mr. Jason.
Through hands-on activities, like measuring distance and time while hopping on tiles in pairs, the fusion of math and science comes to life. This interdisciplinary approach allows Aurelia to connect the dots between subjects and witness the real-world applications of her learning.
“It’s experiences like these that make my middle school journey at SPH Kemang Village truly enriching and exciting,” shared Aurelia.
Mark Thiessen, Head of School at SPH Kemang Village, shares the following insights into the school commitment to excellence in education, “At SPH Kemang Village, our Middle School program has been designed to support students in all areas of development. As a school, we certainly provide high quality, engaging learning experiences for our students. However, each day also includes intentional connection points with committed adults, our teachers, who are as invested in the personal growth of our students as in their academic success.”
He also added, “Our team of teachers curate environments where students can engage in conversations about the big questions of life, and we don’t shy away from challenging conversations.” Lastly, he topped it off with the following point, “We are not teaching our students the way we were taught years ago. We need to prepare them for the world they'll live in."
