You’re Invited: Seminar on Ordo Salutis – The Golden Chain of Salvation

Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) will host the Center for Reformed Theology’s (CRT) lecture series in Reformed Theology themed “Ordo Salutis: The Golden Chain of Salvation” by Rev. Guy M. Richard, PhD. He is the president and associate professor of Systemic Theology at the Reformed Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The seminar, divided into seven sessions, will be held at UPH Grand Chapel on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 from 7am to 4pm WIB. 

Reformed Theology places the strongest emphasis in the absolute sovereignty of the Triune God in the salvation of His elects because, as Paul wrote in the Ephesians 1:4, 8, salvation is by grace alone, not the result of man’s work at all. This emphasis is expressed richly, systematically, and beautifully in the teaching of Ordo salutis or the order of salvation.  

This teaching demonstrates in its deepest significance the gracious work of the Holy Spirit in applying the benefits of Christ’s merit to the life of the elects from effectual calling, regeneration, union with Christ, repentance, faith, justification, adoption, progressive sanctification, toward the final glorification.  

This teaching also shows the consistency of the Triune God’s plan of salvation from predestination, the election of Christ to be the Mediator and the Surety, to the application of Christ’s mediatorship and suretyship in the life of the elects by the Holy Spirit. So, the consistent inter-relation of the doctrine of Predestination, Christology, and Soteriology is displayed in its splendour as the work of the Triune God for the salvation of His beloved elects.  

Therefore, it is not without reason that the Puritan theologian, William Perkins (1558-1602) calls Ordo salutis as “the golden chain of the cause of salvation.” This seminar will elaborate on this Ordo salutis, and it is that the knowledge of it will give the surest comfort for Christians, all God’s elects.
