UPH Prepares to Welcome 25 Scholarship Students from Myanmar
07-August-2023

In the past three years, the Myanmar education system has faced chaos in the face of significant health and political challenges. In 2020, Myanmar schools were shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not long after, the schools were thrown into chaos by the 2021 military coup. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report from 2021 (as cited in DW, 3/4/2022) approximately 12 million children missed school for 18 months due to Covid-19 and coup-related protests and conflict. As of December 2021, the report estimated that school attendance rate was only between 40 to 50 percent.

In view of this situation, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), as a world-class university with a mission to impact students in Indonesia and across Southeast Asia, has launched a special initiative to provide access to tertiary education for Myanmar students whose access to education are impacted by Myanmar’s unstable situation.

UPH’s special initiative will include the provision of up to 25 full undergraduate scholarships for Myanmar students to study at UPH in the programs of Management, Food Technology, Hospitality Management, Nursing, as well as Education in the International Teachers College. The students are expected to commence their studies in August of 2023.

The 25 scholarship recipients were selected from an initial batch of 65 applicants based on their academic achievements, English proficiency, essay submissions, and interviews.

Upon completing their education, students are provided work opportunities in Indonesia and around the world, with the goal of eventually returning to their home country and contributing to the development and progress of Myanmar.
